Company History
Organized in 1920 by Pendleton S. Clark, AIA, in Lynchburg, Virginia, the present firm of Clark Nexsen, Owen, Barbieri, Gibson, P.C. was formed in 1978 as the successor to the firms of Clark, Nexsen, and Owen and Clark, Buhr and Nexsen. In 1996, the firm started doing business as Clark Nexsen Architecture & Engineering. The official corporate name did not change.
During the years since its founding, Clark Nexsen has planned and designed a wide variety of projects. Although generally restricted to Virginia in earlier years, the firm’s growing list of commissions now encompasses the southeastern and Middle Atlantic states as well as many foreign countries.
Clark Nexsen performs complete architectural and engineering services from project inception through completion of construction. Through the years the firm has strived for maximum performance and its goal of designing highly efficient buildings and systems remains unaltered. Our staffing enables us to respond to a client’s routine and urgent needs to provide evaluations, studies, reports, investigations, and construction documents as well as construction administration.
The organization’s growth is based on its success in satisfying the architectural and engineering needs of an increasing list of clients. The firm specialized in architecture at its beginning, but the advantages of providing total services led to the addition of engineers into the organization in 1950. These services now include a diversity of related architectural and engineering services for a broad range of clients.
Clark Nexsen has a long-standing high level of interest and experience in historic preservation and adaptive reuse of buildings and in all aspects of the planning and design of educational facilities, student centers, kitchen/dining facilities, churches, indoor and outdoor recreation facilities, health care facilities, industrial buildings, parking structures, multi-family housing, public buildings, airports, commercial facilities, utility and communication systems and renovations. Countries in which we have provided services include Spain, Italy, Greece, Canada, Panama, Kenya, United Kingdom, Iceland, Morocco, Gambia, Bermuda, Antigua, Ascension Island, Cuba, and the U.S.A.
